Context Sensitive Solutions Forum Held

On March 29th and 30th, 2007 over 60 people attended a public forum on context sensitive planning. This two day event started with an evening presentation at Hannaford Hall, on the University of Southern Maine(USM) campus in Portland. Fred Kent, President of Project for Public Spaces, gave a presentation on how placemaking techniques and community involvement in planning projects can bring positive change to neighborhoods, streets and public spaces. A panel of respondents were given an opportunity to offer their reactions to his remarks.

The next day a training workshop was held at the Double Tree Hotel in Portland and incorporated a trip to the placemaking site at the Deering Avenue intersection between the Muskie School of Public Service and the USM Portland campus. The workshop was geared toward planners, engineers, public works directors, federal and state staffers and members of various regional advocacy groups. PACTS held three slots open for each municipality and encouraged attendance by an employee from each department.

A summary and highlights of the event are planned to be posted here once the data has been compiled. Many thanks to those who attended and made this such a successful event!
